Visiting the Crown Jewels in London an elephant on the grounds surprised us. As it turned out in 2011 an exhibition of the wire sculptures of Kendra Haste brought the “Royal Beasts” back into the Lion Tower. We loved the sight of the wire animals which give the London Royal palace an exotic feel in an, at first thought, unusual place. We learned that historically it was quite common for rulers to keep exotic animals in captivity. Back then the Royal Collection, kept in the medieval Royal Menagerie, was quite extensive because of diplomatic gifts including three leopards from Frederick III. In 1254 an elephant house was constructed. By the 18th century, the menagerie, a small zoological garden by then, was opened to the public; admission cost three half-pence or the supply of a cat or dog to be fed to the lions. In 1828 there were over 280 animals representing at least 60 species. The last of the animals left in 1835. They were relocated to Regent’s Park after one of the lions was accused of biting a soldier. So now beasts of wire bring back the exotic feel to the royal grounds.

Since working on Tata&Squack – Mission Elephant, a children’s book about elephants, I see them everywhere. Last summer when I visited Rome, I ran into an adorable elephant carrying an obelisk on his back. The gentle giant is called Procino, was created by baroque era sculptor Bernini in 1667 and is one of the most curious monuments of Rome. It is the shortest of the eleven Egyptian obelisks you find in Rome and is said to have been one of two obelisks moved from Egypt, where they were built for the pharaoh Apries, nearly 600 years before Christ. The inspiration for the unusual composition came from “Poliphilo’s Dream of the Strife of Love”, an unusual 15th century novel probably by Francesco Colonna. The novel’s main character meets an elephant made of stone carrying an obelisk, and the accompanying woodcut illustration in the book is quite similar to Bernini’s design for the base for the obelisk. The curious placement of the obelisk through the body of the elephant is identical. The sturdy appearance of the structure earned it the popular nickname of “Porcino” (“Piggy”) for a while. The name for the structure eventually changed to Pulcino, the Italian for a small or little “chick”. This may have been a reference to the comparatively short height.

There she married two men who ran nature reserves, Bill Woodley and David Sheldrick and has a daughter with each of them. David, the well-known Tsavo warden turned Daphne’s life into an every day honeymoon. Their deep empathy and understanding, their years of observing Kenya’s rich variety of wildlife and their pioneering work in coming up with the right milk formula to feed orphaned baby elephants, influenced her life until this day. Daphne shares her amazing life with a host of orphans, her first love, Bushy, a liquid-eyed antelope; the little dwarf mongoose; Gregory Peck and the majestic elephant Eleanor, with whom she shared more than forty years of great friendship. The tragedy of Davids early death inspired Daphne to the founding of the world-renowned David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Orphans’ Nursery in Nairobi National Park, where Daphne continues to live and work to this day. My special interest in elephants has reached my daughter. She surprised me with this Blue Elephant; speaking of “Love, Life and Elephants”.

At the end of September I will be joining the Dekkers to the Samburu National Park in Kenya Africa, where we will research a new adventure of Tata&Squack. I will at last meet the plant, animal and bird life of a part of Africa which is especially known for it’s elephant population. The Samburu elephants have been researched by Ian Douglas-Hamilton and his team of “Save the Elephants” for a long time. We are going to visit their research station. I am not only preparing by reading a loth but also taking care of vaccinations and the15 kilo luggage allowance. Maybe even less, so I can take interesting stories back to Europe. I am looking forward to visiting Kenya, a land which has drawn so many people under its spell.

A new year is laying ahead with life to challenge us and to make a difference. One of our challenges is to bring The Big Journey of Tata&Squack, the Great Migration of the Wildebeest under the attention of children. As did an adventurous Zoo director sixty years ago. He took his son, Michael Grzimek, on animal collecting trips to Africa. Young Michael produced a film about one of his father’s books “No Room for Wild Animals”. The film was a critical and commercial success. Instead of enjoying the lifestyle of a young and successful film producer, Michael offered a large percentage of the profit to the Tanzania National Parks to buy land to add to the Serengeti. He was asked to survey the Serengeti and map the movements of the great herds. In late 1957, Michael and his father bought a Dornier 6-seater bush plane painted it in zebra stripes and set of to fly to the Serengeti. One day tragically, Michael’s plane hit a vulture while flying near the Sanjan Gorge in the Gol Mountains east of the Serengeti Plains. He was killed instantly and buried on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. In just a few years this immensely likeable and tireless young man made friends of all races and moved wildlife conservation and management in to a new airborne age. The Flying Zebra created in Tata&Squack is a homage to this selfless and energetic man who gave all he possessed for the wildlife of Africa, including his life. He made a difference.
