Leven in Hamburg was een feest en we zullen het missen. Ons huis, de rozentuin, het overdekte balkon waar we zo vaak hebben gezeten. We woonden in het pittoreske Treppenviertel met zijn vele kleine huizen dicht aan dicht gebouwd tegen de “Elbhang”. Elke zaterdag liepen we met onze “hackenporsche” de vele trappen omhoog naar het dorp om boodschappen te doen op de markt. Als beloning volgde voor de afdaling een kop koffie met croissant bij Carroux.

Those of you who like their daily cup(s) of the dark brew know about the coffee moment. Even on safari I would not want to miss it. Being out the whole day to get the perfect shot can be tiring. So a coffee stop now and then is more than welcome. At home we are quite picky about the coffee we drink. Freshly roasted beans are ground and brewed into a perfect espresso by a serious espresso machine. Topped with freshly foamed milk it is turned into the perfect latte for our coffee break(s). On safari the ritual and the ingredients are somewhat different. At first you have to find the perfect spot: scenic, shady and not too windy. Then you hope that all the necessary items have made it into the picnic bag at four o’clock in the morning. Mostly the choice of coffee is: from the thermos, instant, plunger or espresso cooker. Milk can be powdered or fresh, sometimes even frothed. Whatever you choose, it tastes great. The coffee moment is magic, because you are in the middle of a wide open plain, having a bush latte, accompanied by freshly baked cookies (or dutch stroopwafels). We are looking forward to our next safari!

Das Schöne am Wohnen am Elbufer ist dass es viele nette kleine Restaurants gibt. Auf dem Anleger am Blankeneser Elbstrand gab es einst eine Würstchenbude. Inzwischen ist dies mehr als ein netter Imbiss. Wir haben dort oft ein Glas Wein getrunken, Fisch gegessen und die Schiffe an uns vorbeiziehen lassen.

Meer als vijf jaar geleden bezochten we voor het eerst de Childrens Book Fair in Bologna. Bologna was een culinaire ontdekking voor ons en ook dit jaar wisten we weer ware pareltjes te vinden. Huisgemaakte raviolis met sali bij Trattoria Anna Maria, groene asperges bij Il Cesare en de klassieke tortellini in ‘brodo’ in het ‘gouden’ kabinet. Het maken van verse pasta is hier tot een kunst verheven. De culinaire liefhebber mag de wijk Quadrilatero niet overslaan, vlak naast Piazzo Maggiore. Kleine straatjes met leuke barretjes, waar de prosecci altijd met kleine hapjes worden geserveerd. In Via Caprarie en Via Pescherie wemelt het van de ambachtelijke chocolade, vele jaargangen parmesani, prachtige groenten, verse vis en kleurige bloemen naast parmaham, salami en mortadella. Na een lange beursdag lopen we in de schaduw van de portici, de arcades waar deze stad zo beroemd om is, naar een restaurant waar het heerlijk ontspannen is bij een mooi glas wijn en de vers gemaakte gerechten van de culinaire hoofdstad van Italië.
